Design Assessment

A sophisticated industrial sanctuary blending raw textures with vintage accents for a mature dorm experience.

This transformation takes a standard, cluttered dorm room and elevates it into a mature, Industrial Edge living space. The once-stark cinder block walls have been softened with a cool grey masonry coating, providing a sophisticated backdrop for the warm wood of the lofted beds. The addition of the distressed grey area rug and the vintage-inspired metal trunk creates a grounded, intentional feel that replaces the previous floor clutter. The lighting is the true star of this redesign. By introducing industrial pulley wall lamps and wire cage desk lamps, we've moved away from the harsh overhead glow to a more layered, atmospheric ambiance. The matching heathered grey bedding and the sleek black metal chairs bring a sense of order and cohesion that makes the room feel larger and more purposeful. This is a space that balances the ruggedness of industrial design with the comfort needed for a productive and relaxing student life.

About the Original Room

The original room was a cluttered, institutional dorm space with mismatched bedding and harsh lighting. The cream-colored cinder blocks felt cold and the floor was overwhelmed by disorganized belongings.

Transformation Journey

We began by neutralizing the walls with a grey coating to create a modern backdrop. We then established symmetry by mirroring the bedding and desk accessories, finishing with industrial lighting and a central rug to anchor the space.

Designer Notes

I'm particularly proud of how the pulley lamps transform the vertical space. It turns the limitation of a dorm loft into a design opportunity.
